Chianoscuro is Italian for light-dark, and it is the term used in art for the depiction of the subject in strong contrast. The technique is used mainly by darkening the background and highlighting the figure/subject matter in strong light.
Artists that have used this technique are numerous throughout the ages, but a few of them are: Giovanni Baglione, Caravaggio, Tintoretto and Veronese.
In the most extreme of contrasts in chiaroscuro, it can be called Tenebrism. Tenebrism is accredited mostly to Caravaggio, even though it was first used way before him.
